Start Now! Get Perfect Later!
As a self-Defence school and business owner I am sure like most of you there is always a book or two by your bedside about getting rich, sales, marketing or training concepts. The latest book I read was titled “Start Now - Get Perfect Later”. I decided to read this book as the title got me thinking!! More on that later.
The author Rob Moore talks about procrastination and the many ways in which we procrastinate about things or decisions we need to make and things we should do and don’t do in business and in life. The book provides various strategies we could use to become more efficient and decisive in business and in life. He talks about the delays we impose on ourselves while we get those so-called ducks in a line. This got me thinking!
How many of you feel the urge to clean, tidy that desk or make another coffee when you have that job or task to do? How many of you say to yourselves it’s been a long day I deserve a rest so I won’t exercise or go to class tonight even though you know that once you’re there you will love it. How many of you say It’s raining or cold, I’ll go tomorrow? I’ll start again next week and next week never comes?
It was only in the final few chapters that I realised this book doesn’t just apply to my business and how I can move forward with its ideas but to my pending and current students state of mind to.
I wonder how many new students who really want to start have procrastinated or set some self-imposed barriers as an excuse to not start training with us or starting anything new for that matter.....even though they really want to. Is that you?
It’s fair to say that hardly anyone gets it right or is an expert the first time, but many of us are crippled by indecision and fear of failure. Stop it!
If I had a pound for every excuse or reason, I have ever heard over the years for not starting or for quitting I’d be a rich man. My frequently herd examples along with my new and simplified solutions are below.
- I’m not fit enough to start yet - Start Now - Get Fitter Later!
- I don’t have the time - Bullshit, time comes down to the choices you make so get off your phone, watch less tv, get up earlier and make the time! You deserve it! Start Now – Make the time up Later!
- I’m worried about not being able to keep up with the others - Start Now - Keep up Later!
- I might hold someone back at the beginning - Start Now - Next week there will be another new student!
- I might not be good enough - Start Now - Get Better Later! Every expert was once a beginner.
- I’m not very strong - Start Now - Get stronger as you go!
- I’m not very confident - Start Now - Get more confidant as you go!
- I’m older than most - Start Now - age is just a number.
- I’ve never done this before - Start Now - Learn as you go!
- It’s a little expensive - Really! Like the sky movie or sports package, you never watch or the sandwiches & drink you buy at work because you can’t be bothered to make them the night before. Stop it! You are investing in yourself it’s not expensive.
- It’s a bit of an effort to get there, I have work tomorrow - Stop it! Make the effort a late night won’t kill you.
- I’m busy at work and feel tired when I get home - Stop it! Stop being lazy and make the effort for yourself! Come straight from work, make it happen. Don’t let your work rule your life!
The desire to get it right or have all your ducks in a row or wait for that perfect time can inhibit us from getting started or progressing so you guessed it...the quickest way to be perfect, to get it done is to start right now and get better as you go.
